DTE CEO Jerry Norcia on the economics of nuclear energy

The cost of nuclear energy is just one of the many reasons it is not a viable solution to our energy needs

‘The cost of making electricity from natural gas would have to increase from $3 to $14 to make a nuclear push, Norcia said. DTE expects Monroe County’s nuclear Fermi 2 power plant to continue running into the 2060s and has a license for Fermi 3.

“Until those capital costs come way down,” Norcia said, “it’s going to be hard for us to think about nuclear.”‘
