Hotspot on Unloading Equipment Reveals Failed Radiation Shielding 

Savannah River Site (SRS), South Carolina— According to a U.S. federal agency document just released on Friday May 12, the first of 100-150 truckloads of highly radioactive liquid waste from Canada has been unloaded at the Savannah River Site, and the transfer container has not provided fully adequate radiological shielding to protect workers.

Making Disaster Seem Acceptable

Saturday, March 11, 2017 will be the 6th anniversary of the triple meltdown disaster at Fukushima that is still dumping radioactive isotopes into the air and the ocean.  it is still decades away from being “cleaned up,” and will not be satisfactorily cleaned up during the lifetime of anyone alive today – unless we drastically change our standards as to what is acceptable. There is an organized effort to get us to change those standards. The press release below outlines some of that effort, and is packed with links to research and expert testimony that fully justifies refusing to accept new “standards” set for the convenience of the nuclear industry. CITIZENS’ RESISTANCE AT FERMI 2 (CRAFT) REPLY TO NRC STAFF AND DTE LAWYERS OPPOSITION TO THE CRAFT MOTION TO REOPEN THE HEARING AND SUBMIT A NEW CONTENTION

Now comes Citizens’ Resistance at Fermi 2 (CRAFT) to reply to both NRC Staff and DTE filings against reopening the hearing and submitting a new contention regarding the proposed 20-year license extension for the aged Fermi 2 nuclear reactor. For the reasons set forth below, the Secretary of the Commission acted within its sound discretion when it halted the issuance of the 20-year license extension to DTE Electric Company, a subsidiary of DTE Energy, and should therefore allow the ALSB Hearing to be reopened and admit our new contention. CRAFT concurs with appreciation the Acting Secretary of the Commission for recognizing the legality of our Motion to Reopen the Hearing and present a new contention. NRC Staff filing continues to focus on the shortcoming of filing done by average citizens instead of a lawyer, and yet they fail to read the content while they focus on form. “CRAFT’s Motion to Reopen should also be denied because it is untimely and does not raise an exceptionally grave environmental issue.” (page 10, 1stparagraph) We believe that not protecting citizens to the fullest extend is a grave environmental issue. Detroit, MI —  The Alliance To Halt Fermi-3 (ATHF3) applauds its ally, Citizens’ Resistance At Fermi-Two (CRAFT), for filing a Motion to Re-open the federal legal proceedings against DTE Electric Company’s Fermi-2 License Renewal Application (LRA).  On Monday, November 21, 2016 CRAFT submitted a new contention to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) pertaining to the concerns of the Alliance’s “Got KI?” campaign.

Radioactive Contamination – Still Not Good

You may have heard propaganda saying something like, “Once mankind cleared out of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, wildlife is thriving in spite of the radiation.” Well, that’s just wrong. Wildlife is not thriving.

What has happened downwind and of Chernobyl and Fukushima could happen downwind of Fermi or more than a hundred other reactors in the US and Canada.
